Icon Wines: Grüner Veltliner
and Riesling „Unendlich®“
“The varieties of nature are infinite, but every vineyard resembles a microcosm that reflects life and history, and even our family”.
The idea to exhaust all possibilities of getting the maximum of terroir and variety character from a wine was already alive well before the first “Unendlich” was produced. With the 1998 vintage this vision became a reality for the very first time. The first barrel tastings confirmed the creation of a Riesling with a definitive “Mozartean” personality and an infinitely long finish. Hence the chosen name for this unique wine.
We had produced the wine, which shone and lured as an ideal in the winemaker’s starry firmament, yet we were without a fitting label… How could you illustrate this extraordinary class of wine? The solution lay in the world of opera: FX, a huge opera enthusiast, identified a draft of the stage scenery for Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” (Die Zauberflöte) in an illustrated chronicle of the Vienna State Opera House. It was a background designed by the Prussian architect and set designer Karl-Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) and depicts the starry sky on a blue background, with the “Queen of the Night” as a symbol of its cosmic infinity.
The “unendlich” wine with its infinite finish – with the stage setting as its allegory.
